MUSEUM OF MOUNT SAN MICHELE
Mount San Michele was the main Austro-Hungarian defence bastion in the Isontino Karst during WW1. Due to its strategic importance, both Italians and Austro-Hungarians fiercely fought for it ever since the conflict’s inception.
In 1916 it was conquered and protected by heroic Italian infantry against the Enemy’s attacks: because of its role during the war, the summit of Mount San Michele has been acknowledged since 1922 as a ”Monumental Zone”.
In this area there are countless, interesting constructions, some of which may be visited, such as the Cavern of General Lukachich, the Schönburg Tunnel and the Third Army’s Cannon Gallery. The Mount San Michele Historical Museum can be visited containing warfare exhibits of that period and a rich photographic and map documentation.
