The area features two large Karst depressions partly filled in by the lakes and separated by a limestone ridge. The water level keeps changing and depends on the flow rates of rivers Vipacco and Isonzo. During the low water level periods, the levels of the two rivers drop so much so, that lake surfaces shrink to just circular puddles, a few metres big. Inside the reserve there is the Visitors’ Centre which arranges guided tours and other didactical activities. It also houses an interactive exhibition illustrating the Carso (Karst) in its naturalistic and historical-cultural aspects.
